Ray Jessel

I'll be heading to Don't Tell Mama's on Wednesday, 4/26 to catch Ray Jessel's last show there. If you've never seen Ray, I cannot recommend him more highly. I saw his show a few weeks ago, and I can honestly say that it was the most entertaining hour I've spent anywhere in a long time! Ray is a terrificly talented songwriter, whose clever lyrics are some of the funniest I've heard. The show moves well and incorporates a variety of styles, so the time just flies. It starts at 7 p.m. tomorrow - hope to see you there!

Monday Night

I'll be heading to Birdland this evening for a great night of entertainment...starting at 7 p.m. with the amazing Billy Stritch in concert, singing the Mel Torme songbook. Should be awesome! After that, it's my usual Monday night tradition - Cast Party from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Cast Party is a terrific way to spend a Monday night - it's an open mike for cabaret/jazz/broadway/folk singers. The lineup varies from week to week, but it's usually a pretty incredible amount of talent. It's hosted by the fabulous Jim Caruso...definitely worth popping into.

Weekend Treats

If you're looking for something to do on Friday or Saturday, there are a couple of great shows I plan on attending this weekend. On Friday, 4/7 I will be going to see John Wallowich at the Duplex. He's one of the most clever, entertaining songwriters I know, and it's going to be a terrific show. On Saturday, 4/8 at 9:30, I'll be heading to Helen's to hear the fabulous Jeanne MacDonald in her MAC - award nominated show. Maybe I'll see you there...

Broadway By the Year

I went to a great show at Town Hall last night - The Broadway Musicals of 1956. It's part of a series produced by Barbara and Scott Siegel. Once a month, they pick a year and put on a concert of songs from broadway shows that were produced in that year. The casts are always terrific - a combination of broadway and cabaret stars. Last night's show, for instance, celebrated the songs that were heard in My Fair Lady, The Most Happy Fella, Candide and Bells Are Ringing, among others. The star-studded cast included Christine Andreas (Eliza in the 1976 revival of My Fair Lady), Mark Kudisch, John Treacy Egan (The Producers), Ashley Brown (Beauty and the Beast), Rachelle Rak (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) and award-winning cabaret artistst Brandon Cutrell and Connie Pachl. It was a fabulously entertaining evening...the next one is The Broadway Musicals of 1968, to be held on May 1st.
